LAYERING FOR WOMEN

  1. RAW KNITS
Go for textured knits and leave the seams unfinished and hanging to create a relaxed look. Heavy knitted covers over an asymmetric full-sleeve shirt and skirt gives a stylish drape.
  2. LAYERED 9-YARD
Play with the classic chintz drape. Pair multi-style jackets and short silk trench coats with elegant saris or think a heavily embroidered ghagra choli to give it a twist. Decorated epaulettes (ornamental shoulder pieces) on your jacket can help secure the pallu and lend a polished finish. Or just wrap the pallu around the neck as a scarf for the Indian winter.
  3. PRINT PLAY
Learn the art of playing with prints and fabrics. Vegetable and fruit prints are in vogue; mix them with classic monochrome or red and white checks to demonstrate innovation. A workwear shirt paired with wide-legged pants and a canvas trench coat is an instant way to uplift your look.
  4. COLOURFUL COTTONS
Who says you need to put away your cottons in winter? Create funky boho looks by layering your colourful cottons. You can sport your crushed cotton skirt, palazzo pants, pocketed skirt, A-line kurta, traditional ikat-print dupatta — all at the same time. Just make sure you go for a mix of plains and prints, not just prints.
  5. MAXI SKIRT
A black collarless shirt worn over a maxi keeps you warm during the day. Add a pair of funky black boots and finish with a side braid for a schoolgirl appeal.
  6. CAPE CALLING
Unfold an earthy palette with pristine white, pink, sand, chartreuse, forest, stripes and neutral black as the base colours for your garments. Portray a strong, confident, global dresser by sporting a classic, clean silhouette layered with a handwoven floral cross-over cape. “Control over drama” is the key to getting this look right.
  7. CRAFT A KAFTAN
Have similar stoles or shawls in two colours? Get crafty and convert them into an easy-to-wear kaftan. Stitch the fabric to give it a distinct shape and an unusual look. You can sport it on almost everything in your wardrobe, plus boast a bit about your designing skills.

FOR MEN

  1. ZIPPER ZAPPER
Get your layered look deep-dive style by opting for zippered pieces instead of classic button-down shirts. Combine prints cleverly — solids are trending. Go with a solid ensemble comprising of a quirky printed jacket, slouchy tee and comfortable, well-fitting bottoms in rugged masculine hues of black, grey and charcoal.
  2. HIGH ON HYPNOSIS
Create a hypnotic print kaleidoscope and steal the spotlight. The entire look consists of floral-printed pants, sharp-cut shirt, slick-fitted, full-sleeved jacket and brogues — with socks screaming for attention. Let a waxed, twirly moustache and a Mohawk haircut add to the look.
  3. CROPPED TOP
Take menswear styling a notch higher and dress up for a European winter. Experiment with cropped pullovers over a bandhagala and a pair of classic checkered pants. The well-balanced look of dark hues like ox blood and navy blue and a hint of khaki creates a strong impact. Finish with a stand-out pair of shoes.
  4. LAD IN LEATHER
This winter, let leather be your prime canvas of communication. Make a statement in a pair of relaxed and roomy pants, wrap skirt, longline shirt and a well-fitted leather jacket. The look is both conversational and visually arresting. Leather blousons can also give your winter look an interesting touch.
