Fashion Notes

Ethnic fashion can be seen as a challenge or a whole new opportunity for men to showcase their sartorial side. Here’s how to go about styling for the celebrations ahead Gone are the days when men subscribed to the idea of ‘when in doubt wear black’. The modern Indian sartorial gent is suave, with tastes in fashion that are on par with his female peers. This festive season, men are all set with their fashion artillery, ready to flaunt their stylish sensibilities with effortless ease. Men’s festive wear is no longer restricted to kurtas and churidars; it encompasses a whole new range of styles that can be experimented with according to one’s taste and personality.
REIMAGINE STAPLES
The grand old dhoti will make a fashionable comeback this Diwali with gorgeous Benarasi fabrics in pure cotton and silk. While there is nothing new still about pairing kurtas over denims, give this Indo-Western look a new twist by adding a pocket square and a hat. “The latest trend in menswear is the print-on-print look. Mix bold prints with solid silhouettes to make a fashion statement this festive season,” says noted menswear designer Ajay Kumar.
To elevate the allure of an elegant tunic, pair it with fitted printed trousers for a subtle festive feel. “Rework your heritage dressing style with printed kurta-styled shirts and wrap-over trousers. Alternatively, try layering white linen cowl shirts with printed blazers and jackets. Stay true to your personal style, but make sure you add at least one new element to your ensemble such as an ethnic scarf, solid coloured oxfords or Kolhapuri chappals,” adds Kumar.
DRESS WITH EASE
Every sartorial gentleman knows the importance of the classic white and black shirts. However, the cut, style and material make a world of difference to the ensemble. Experiment with linen shirts, pants and even blazers to make a cool and comfortable statement. Wear darker coloured jackets over khakis or denims for a fun evening get-together and reserve lighter coloured linens for day events. Get it right with your grooming and hairstyle to look the part when planning your look for the upcoming festivities. Throw in a pair of loafers, complete with quirky socks peeking out of your shoes, and you are all ready to have a fashionable festive season ahead! — Aiana J
Ajay Kumar’s collection had geometric designs and filigree patterns in hand-block printed khadi and handloom fabrics.
